The elbow is a complicated 3-joint structure and is prone to injuries of the attaching tendons that anchor the muscles to the joint. The most common cause of elbow pain is from overuse injuries such as racket sports, weightlifting, use of heavy equipment, repetitive work tasks undertaken in a variety of occupations.
Our physiotherapists will perform a detailed assessment of the elbow and identify all contributing factors as well as co-morbidities associated with the person's symptoms. Elbow pain often originates from involvement of the neck, shoulder and wrist.
The aim is to improve range of motion of the joint with hands-on manual therapy, unloading damaged tissue to reduce pressure, gradually restore strength and to return to a full range of motion.
Treatment options for elbow pain include:
- Joint mobilisation
- Strapping
- Splinting
- dry needling
- soft tissue therapy
- postural correction
An exercise program involving strengthening, improved flexibility, and motor control exercise will be prescribed for elbow pain. Often modifications to daily activities and sports are required to minimise or prevent aggravation of the elbow and recurrence of pain.
Sometimes braces or supports are needed to provide stability to the elbow joint to help with the healing process and reducing pain.
