Fracture management
Helping you heal on your way to recovery
Unfortunately, fractures are common through all stages of life; however, fracture rates increase with age and are more common in females. Most fractures heal without problems.
Our physiotherapists can help at each stage of your fracture management from diagnosis, treatment and through to a faster and complete functional recovery from the fracture.
At an initial assessment, if a fracture is suspected or if treatment fails to progress as anticipated, your physiotherapist will refer you for an x-ray or imaging to check for evidence of a fracture or for a specialist review.
During your treatment, you will likely have the fracture immobilised in a cast, splint or brace, which can cause stiffness in the joints near the fracture. .
Your physiotherapist will also advise you how to reduce your swelling and care for your cast, splint or brace and give you exercises to prevent other joints from becoming stiff. Our physiotherapists will warn you about what to look out for regarding increased pain, swelling, throbbing or pins and needles and how to manage these.
As your fracture heals, your physiotherapist may adjust the cast or splint and will monitor your injury and ongoing exercises. Once the fracture is healed we can, remove casts if needed, and then provide you with a progressive tailored exercise program and advice on what to expect during the rehabilitation stage and how long it will take to full recovery.
We can provide walking aids such as crutches, and slings and will instruct you in their correct use.
