Knee pain

Restoring strength and control to keep you moving
The knee is the largest joint in the body and is known as a hinge joint. It is one of the most commonly injured joints! The knee has attaching ligaments, muscles, connective tissue, fat pads and a cushioning disc which are all prone to injury. Knee pain is usually caused by trauma or overuse e.g. stress fractures, osteoarthritis, growing pains (Osgood Schlatter’s Disease) or bursitis.
Our physiotherapists will complete comprehensive testing and biomechanical assessment to identify if any of the adjacent joints such as the hips, pelvis, lower back and feet are contributing to the knee pain.

Treatment options for knee pain include:

  • soft tissue massage
  • taping or splinting
  • joint mobilisation
  • strengthening exercises
  • heat therapy
  • ultrasound
  • TENS
  • dry needling.
Developing strength, flexibility, range of motion and control using stability exercises and stretches may be part of your ongoing treatment plan. You will be provided with functional exercises to help you return to the activities you enjoy.
Strengthening of the muscles around the knee and balance are an important part of your rehabilitation program. Having good control of the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes and core muscles is required for your body to align and stabilise your leg and knee in activities such as running and landing.
We stock knee braces, foam rollers, knee guards, Theraband, Theratubing and anti-inflammatory creams if needed.
